Accidental Dreams

Smartmap

The Mann Library SmartMap is an interactive online floor map of the Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University. It is intended to help visitors find and use the library’s various resources more effectively.

The project was initially designed and developed by a team of six in Cornell Software Engineering class.  Here is an early functional specification written by us.

With the help of my team and the on-going feedback we received from our clients, I brought SmartMap through a design process which began as initial user workflows, and progressed through wireframes and high fidelity mockups, to the final website.  Subsequently, I continued to work with the Mann library librarians to finish the project. Through the two years of developing this application, and beside the visual aspects of the application, I also:

  • Implemented the user interactions using the javascript framework, prototype and script.aculo.us
  • Documented the javascript classes using JSDoc
  • Written detailed administrator user manual and system installation instructions

SmartMap was released to the public earlier this year with positive reception.
